The Barcelona Provincial Council is deploying cabling infrastructure through its roads to facilitate fibre optic accessibility for all the municipalities in the province of Barcelona. The project, with a budget of 18,899,161.33 euros fully financed by the Barcelona Provincial Council, will benefit 55 municipalities and over 178,000 people in the first phase. The work of widening and improving roadsides, in which the fibre optic infrastructure will be incorporated, will impact on 252 km of roadways belonging to the Barcelona Provincial Council. The deployment of fibre-optic cables is one of the strategic projects of the Barcelona Provincial Council's Action Plan Mandate, the objective of which is for all citizens to have access to broadband service. To make this possible, the Council takes advantage of any previously planned projects as part of the usual maintenance and improvement work for road safety to incorporate the fibre-optic infrastructure within concrete roadsides. The Centre for Telecommunications and Information Technology of the Government of Catalonia (CTTI in its Catalan initials) will manage this new network based on the agreement established between this entity and the Barcelona Provincial Council.
